Wyandotte County Lake is located in Kansas City, Kansas not far from the Kansas Speedway and Legends Shopping Center. The 400 acre lake is surrounded by 1,500 acres of parkland and is home to several different species of wildlife.

There is a nice paved road that takes you around the lake and provides several good opportunities to photograph wildlife as well as numerous scenic views. The lake was constructed in the 1930's by the Works Progress Administration and features several original stone buildings including a marina and boathouse and the James P. Davis Reception Hall which is a unique building worth stopping by and talking a closer look. The lake is also home of the F.L. Schlagle Library and Environmental Center.

Canadian Geese and different species of ducks and waterfowl are commonly seen as well as numerous white-tailed deer and an occasional wild turkey. There is a one way dirt/gravel road on the east side of the lake that takes you on a short loop along the shoreline before meeting back up with the pavement near shelter 7. The deer photos featured on this page were primarily taken in the area of shelters 7 and 5.

This lake is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves have changed colors and the hills around the lake are awash in color. The winding road around the lake can also offer some great places to take pictures of your special classic car or motorcycle. There are several pullouts along the road that allow you opportunities to get some great scenic pictures including one by the dam that gives you a pretty view of the Missouri River Valley below.

Wyandotte County Lake and Park offers a great opportunity to see and photograph wildlife and landscapes. The original stone buildings and wooden guard rails add to the scenic attraction of this lake. This is one of my favorite places to photograph wildlife, especially deer and is a hidden gem in the Kansas City Metro area. If you are in that area when the leaves have changed colors in the fall you will not be disappointed by taking a leisurely drive around this beautiful lake.
