Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse Review

Ergomotion pivoting MouseAs a photographer I spend quite a bit of time in front of a computer editing photos, etc. Therefore when I heard that someone had designed a better more ergonomic mouse I was anxious to try it out. After all isn't the world always looking for a "better mousetrap" or in this case a 'better computer mouse"?

Having read about the Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse and its ErgoMotion pivot system on their website it was clear that they had come up with a much different mouse than anything I had used before. The idea of their unique pivot system especially intrigued me as to whether it really would help reduce fatigue when using a mouse for long periods of time as many of us who use computers for many hours a day sometimes experience.

Using the Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse

Whirl Notebook Mouse Battery CompartmentUpon receiving my Smartfish Whirl Mini Notebook Laser Mouse I was impressed by the unique design and how comfortable the mouse felt in my hand. The quality of the device is obvious in the way it is designed and made.

Turning the mouse upside down reveals the battery compartment door. Inside the battery compartment are the two AAA batteries that power the mouse as well as a place for the wireless USB dongle to be stored when the mouse is being transported.

Also on the very bottom of the mouse is an on-off switch allowing you to easily turn off the laser mouse for storage or transporting.

Along with their patented notebook mouse I also received Smartfish’s combination travel pouch and mouse pad. This great product provides a nice protective pouch to store the mouse in as well as serves as a mouse pad when using the mouse while traveling. While very simple in design it is a great addition to any wireless mouse providing not only a nice protective pouch but also an always ready portable mouse pad.

Although the Whirl Mini Notebook Mouse is just slightly heavier at 3.4 ounces than my old notebook mouse (3.2 ounces) it feels remarkable lighter when being used. The unique design and nice pivot motion makes this mouse feel very light in use and really does result in a very “fluid, air like” motion that is very noticeable when switching from a traditional notebook mouse to this new and improved design.

Whirl Mini Notebook MouseWhen I first starting to use the Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse the benefits of the pivoting design very quickly become obvious. While it feels different to begin with, before long I really came to appreciate the mouse’s ability to pivot right and left as well as front and back.

Not only does the pivoting allow the mouse to feel surprisingly light in your hand it also seems to extend the range of the mouse’s ability to move in any direction.

By simply tilting your hand any direction you can move the mouse cursor quite a bit with the mouse’s base moving very much at all. This is most noticeable when moving the cursor vertically on the screen but is also experienced to a lesser degree when moving right to left.

Designed so that either right or left handed people can benefit from its great design the Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse really is a “better mouse” in my opinion. Having used it considerably for an extended period of time I can say that is a product that lives up the manufacturers claims.

When using it I find myself experiencing less wrist and hand fatigue even after long hours on my computer. Their patented “ErgoMotion” pivot system really does adapt to your hand motion resulting in a mouse that seems lighter and requiring less effort to use. Allowing the mouse to pivot with use does keep your hand and wrist from remaining in a fixed position and did result in more comfortable operation for me.

The SmartFish Ergonomic Mouse is available in both desktop and laptop versions and can be purchased from a number of online retailers. In my extended test of the Smartfish Ergonomic Mouse I would give it a 5 Star rating. It is a well designed product that in my opinion lives up to the manufacturers claims.

Deigned by a group led by Dr. Jack Atzmon, a practicing chiropractor, the Smartfish company is dedicated to making computer peripherals such as mice and keypads designed to help reduce repetitive stress injuries such as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. In my opinion they have truly designed a “better mouse”.
